When the tin
and copper mining industry went into decline around 1860, a third
of the mining popluation took their skills to other continents.
The miners were single-minded, individualistic and as tough as the
rock they hewed; for example, the contribution they made to the
Californian Gold Rush was unique; Cornish pumps enabled increased
productivity to make the Empire Mine in Grass Valley, richest mine
in California.
The descendents
of those families are out there still, along with similar folk in
Australia and South Africa; every where there is hard rock mining,
the roots of the population will be Cornish.

So
please speak to us- this is a call to all Cornish families and Associations
across the world to tell us their stories on tape; the tapes will
go into our Library and be enjoyed by many people; there is nothing
our listeners like to hear more than 'local' recollections.
Please send any tapes to the address on our 'contact us' page
